Description

Podlaska Wytwornia Samolotow PWS-26, Polish Air Force, 1939

The PWS-26 was an advanced trainer built in Poland, which first flew in 1935 and was introduced into service in 1937.  Some 320 were built in the run-up to the Second World War.  The type was derived from the earlier PWS-16 trainer, but had a strenghtened airframe, which allowed it to be used for dive-bomber training.

The PWS-26 saw active service during the German invasion of September 1939, mostly as a liaison aircraft, but in some cases also as a light attack bomber.  In at least one case, a Polish pilot managed to down a Bf 109 during a dogfight by outmanoeuvering it and tricking it to crash.  In the end, the the PWS-26 was one of the last Polish aircraft to fly during the German invasion, continuing to fly sorties right up to the Polish surrender.

PWS-26s also served with the German Luftwaffe and Soviet Air Force (who captured examples during the invasion of Poland), and the Bulgarian and Rumanian air forces (who purchased some of the captured aircraft via the Luftwaffe).  Some of the Rumanian aircraft remained in service into the 1950s; of the 320 built, one survived into preservation at the Polish Aviation Museum in Kraków.

This is one of the handful of models I "Blitzed" - i.e. built in under 24 hours (from box-seal broken to decals applied).
