A Year in Comics - February 20th
Haiopeis
Thomas Siemensen was born on February 20th 1961 in Itzehoe, West-Germany. After finishing high school at the Auguste Viktoria Schule Itzehoe, he started an apprenticeship as a retoucher, before embarking on a course in graphic design at the Muthesius Kunsthochschule Kiel.
In 1991, Siemensen started a gag strip about sharks, Haiopeis for a surfing magazine (as he knew little about surfing itself), however this folded after only three gags had been published in it. He subsequently sold Haiopeis to numerous other publications.
Other than Haiopeis, Siemensen also published the gag-strip Ingo Pien der Pinguin for the Hamburger Abendblatts between 1993 and 2007; and the gag-strip Die Gelos for a series of medical publications.
