A Year in Comics - January 4th

Day 4: Alef-Thau - Alef-Thau

Arnaud Dombre (pen-name Arno) was born on January 4th 1961.  Born to a father who was a teacher, Arnaud spent his youth in Iraq, Uruguay and Chile.  His parents forbade him to read comics, however despite their wishes he went on to stury art in France, and published his first comics at the age of 19.  This led to an encounter with the French-Chilean artist/writer/film director Alejandro Jodorowsky, and together they started work on the fantasy comic Alef-Thau, about limb-less child born in a fantasy world, who during the course of his quests regains his limbs in order to save his world.

Arno also drew a number of one-shots, but he remains most known for work on Alef-Thau.  Unfortunately, Arno died at the age of 35 as a result of a lingering illness in 1996 while working on the 8th album of Alef-Thau, which was subsequently finished by Al Covial and issued in 1997.

Ah, he went against the wishes of terrible parents and had an excellent career, only to have it cut tragically short by illness.  That really sucks!  At least his art will live on.
