Day 6: Little Red Riding Hood, in the style of Gustave Doré

Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré was a French artist, printmaker, illustrator and sculptor, who worked primarily with wood engraving.

Born on January 6th 1832 in Strasbourg, France, Gustave Doré started working as a caricaturist for the French paper Le Journal pour rire (The News for laughs).  The quality of his wood engravings was such, that he soon gained commissions to depict scenes from books of numerous great authors, such as Dante, Rabelais, Balzac and Milton.  In 1853 he was asked to illustrate the works of Lord Byron; this commission led to additional work from British publishers, including a new illustrated Bible.  In 1860 he was asked to illustrate a French edition of Cervante's Don Quixote; his illustrations inspired the subsequent look of the characters.  His work for the Grande Bible de Tours of 1866 (139 engravings) led to his work being exhibited in London; and in 1869 he received a five-year contract to draw a series of engravings of London, for which he received the unheard-of sum of £10.000 per year.  This work was eventually published as London: a Pilgrimage in 1872, a book containing 180 engravings.  While contemporary critics were divided on the work, the book was a commercial and popular succes, and led to further commissions.

Other than engravings and woodcuts, Gustave Doré also made a large number of paintings, many of which are on display in art galleries around the world.  For his work, Doré received France's highest honour, the Légion d'Honneur, in 1861.

Gustave Doré died on January 23rd 1883, at the age of 51, following a short illness.  He was buried in the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France.
