Description

Hawker Tempest Mk.V Series 2 (Academy model kit #1669 - 1/72 scale)

"The Big Show was over. The public had been satisfied. The programme had been rather heavy, the actors not too bad, and the lions had eaten the trainer. It would be discussed for a day or two more round the family table. And even when it was all forgotten - the band, the fireworks, the resplendent uniforms - there would still remain on the village green the holes of the tent pegs and a circle of sawdust. The rain and the shortness of man's memory would soon wipe out even those." - 'The Big Show', Pierre Clostermann.

The Hawker Tempest was one of three Hawker fighter planes to see service in the Second World War. Successor to the Hurricane and Typhoon, it first flew in September 1942 and entered service in April 1944.

Powered by a 24-cylinder Napier Sabre engine, the Tempest Mk.V was the only Tempest version to see service during the Second World War. It had a maximum speed of 700 km/h (435 mph), fast enough to take on the early German jet aircraft.

NV724 of the Royal Air Force's 3 Squadron, 122 Wing is probably the most famous of all Tempests, as it was one of four Tempests used by World War II ace Flight Lieutenant Pierre Clostermann, DFC and bar (28 Feb 1921 - 22 Mar 2006). Clostermann named his Tempest 'Le Grand Charles', after General Charles de Gaulle (22 Nov 1890 - 9 Nov 1970 - French general of the Free French Forces, later president of France during 1958-1969).

Clostermann was a confirmed fighter ace during the Second World War. He served with RAF's 341, 602, 274, 56 and 3 Squadron, and flew on Spitfire Mk.V and Mk.IXs, and on Tempest Mk. Vs. During the 432 missions he undertook between January 1943 and the 4th of May, 1945, he shot down 23 enemy aircraft, with another six shared, 5 probable and 7 damaged, plus 24 ground kills. He was also credited with the destruction of 225 trucks, 72 locomotives, 5 tanks and 2 torpedo boats.

After the War, he worked as an engineer, a representative for Cessna and Renault. He also had a succesful carreer as politician, serving as député (MP) in the French Assemblée Nationale between 1946 and 1969. He also flew ground attack missions in 1956-1957 during the Algerian War.

Clostermann is foremost known for the book on his experiences during the War, 'The Big Show' (1951).

I just sent you a PM regarding this same model, do you remember how did the decals behave when you apply them? I´ll be buying Academy´s more recent boxing though, 12466.
