Former Prussian P8 64.045 halts her train at the much too short platform of Boussu-en-Fagne on Line 156, causing a bit of a delay for the traffic at the crossing.

----------

64.045 was one of the original 167 Prussian P8 locomotives handed to the Belgian State Railways (Chemin de Fer d'Etat Belge) in 1919.  Built by Henschel as engine 22038, she had a long and illustrious career, starting on August 8th 1916 when she entered service as "Altona 2445" at the KPEV.  In 1919 she was handed to the Belgian State as part of the War reparations imposed upon Germany under the Versailles Treaty, but she retained her Altona 2445 numbering until 1925, when she was renumbered as Type 64 6445.  During the hectic days of the German Blitzkrieg of May 1940, she was evacuated to Calais, but returned to Occupied Belgium on November 22th 1940.  However, in 1943, the Occupiers reclaimed her (and her Armastice brethren) as "stolen under the provisions of Versailles" and took her back to Germany - 6445 would only return to Belgium three years later, in January 1946.  She was repaired, given a revision, and renumbered under the system of 1945 as "64.045".  Her post-War career was less hectic: almost all of it would be spent at the Ath depot (July 1946 - May 1965), with only short stints at Haine-St-Pièrre (March to July 1946) and Tournai (May 1965 to April 1967).  After the last passenger steam services in Belgium were run on December 20th 1966, 64.045 found herself as one of eight P8s retained as "reserves", and subsequently was struck off charge on April 20th 1967, the day the last steam engines of the Belgian Railways were finally retired, after 132 years of service.

... or was she?

As it happens, she wasn't.  Barely two months later, on June 10th 1967, 64.045 found herself at Ostend, at the head of the Royal Train once used by King Leopold II (nowadays partly displayed at the TrainWorld museum in Schaarbeek), on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the grant of city rights by Margaretha van Constantinopel to Ostend (1267).  It would be the last time 64.045 would run under her own steam: on August 1st 1969 she was transferred to the museum depot of Leuven, where she remained untill its closure in 2012 and subsequent partial demolition in 2014.  Currently the proud engine is held elsewhere, however it is planned that 64.045 will find its rightful spot at the future railway museum at Ostend.

----------

Boussu-en-Fagne was a station on the Belgian railway line 156, which linked the French town of Anor with the Belgian town of Hastière.  Built between 1858 and 1866 by the private railway company Compagnie de Chimay, the line was integrated into the Belgian State Railways in 1948.  However, the advent of private car ownership and the cost of exploiting the line led to its eventual closure in favour of replacement bus services, with the cross-border section Chimay - Anor being closed in 1953; the section Mariembourg - Hastière being closed in 1954; and passenger services being abandoned on the remaining Chimay - Mariembourg section in 1964.  While the line was broken up between Mariembourg and Hastière in 1978, the Mariembourg  - Anor section was retained for freight services as late as 1984, with freight services continuing to run between Mariembourg and Chimay until 1987.

From 1987 until 1999, the former passenger line was used for seasonal tourist services by the CFV3V heritage organisation, based at Mariembourg, which also ran - and continues to run - services between Mariembourg and Treignes.  However, unlike the latter, the Chimay route was difficult to maintain and run, and the poor state of the railway line eventually led to its abandonment in 1999.  Nowadays, the line no longer exists.  However, the former station of Boussu-en-Fagne still stands, nowadays being used as a private property.
