Hanco Kolk was born on March 11th 1957 in Den Helder, the Netherlands.  Making his professional debut as a cartoonist in 1974, he was one of the co-founders of the Studio Arnhem cartoonists' collective in 1980.  He initially made some cartoons for underground publications, before working as a writer in the Dutch studios of the Donald Duck weekly.  In 1984, he started working for the Dutch comic publication Eppo, where he drew the comic strip Gilles de Geus (1983-2003), originally as a solo-project, but later joined by writer Peter de Wit, with who he would continue to work on other projects as well.

In the early '90s, Kolk started with the experimental strip Meccano, which was drawn in a stylist, abstract style, which he would later continue to use in other series.

In 2001, Kolk, once again with De Wit, started the strip S1NGLE, about three female nurses and flatmates, chronicling their daily lives and troubles, their work in hospital, and their endless (and hopeless) attempts at finding the 'right one'.  Appearing daily in a number of publications and newspapers both in the Netherlands and Belgium, the series' popularity resulted in a live-action television series which ran for three seasons between 2008 and 2010.

Other than his comic work, Kolk is also known as a prolific illustrator.  As such, he has worked with The New Yorker, for which he made a series of illustrations in 2006.
