A Year in Comics - March 17th

Dennis the Menace and Gnasher

While the date of birth for the artist David Law is sketchy at best (born 1908 - died April 1971), that of his creation is better known: in Beano 452, dated March 17th 1951, the character of Dennis the Menace made its first appearance.

While the official publication date was March 17th 1951, the actual issue went on sale on March 12th - coincidentally the very same day another character by the same name made his debut in the United States.  At first, the adventures focussed on Dennis and his parents, but gradually a whole host of characters were introduced: his granny Whentball, who knitted Denis' striped jumper; Walter, Dennis' eternal nemesis; and in 1968, Gnasher the Abyssinian wire-haired tripe hound.  Gnasher was the first of a whole host of Dennis' pets to be introduced to the comic: over time, Dennis gained others, including Rasher the pig, and Dasher the spider; Dennis himself gained a younger sister in 1998 in the form of Bea the mini-Menace.

In 1990, the comic made its transition to the small screen, with the ITV puppet series The Beano's Dennis the Menace and Gnasher Show, followed in 1996 by the BBC animated series Dennis the Menace, and its  2009 revamp Dennis and Gnasher.

Classic Dennis. :D

I never even knew about the American version until a few years ago. The thing I remember most about the British version is that there was a Beano land in a theme park I used to go to that heavily used Dennis and Gnasher for the rides. Unfortunately, the theme park decided to change the area's theme to a jungle safari so its all gone now. :/

Also, I love how you drew Gnasher. He looks like he's ready to chase after the mailman!

I believe that the American "Dennis" was named "Daniel the Rascal" in some European countries.

I was always confused by these two versions of Dennis the Menace. Always thought one was a rip off of the other or some idiotic revamped version of the original. Never knew they were actually both originals.

I'm actually surprised there was so much confusion about these two...

The main difference is that THIS Dennis was actually menacing from time to time...  ;)

That is totally bizarre!  That both characters with the same name came out at the same time.  There must have been some sort of event or other pop culture thing that influenced both creators.  Nice work!

Oddly not.

The British Dennis the Menace gained his name from a music hall performance, which featured the line I'm Dennis the Menace from Venice.  Meanwhile, the American Dennis the Menace gained his name from when the author's son misbehaved himself so much that his exasperated mother exclaimed to her husband: Your son (Dennis) is a menace!...
