A Year in Comics - March 7th

Jonathan Cartland & Young Blueberry

Michel Blanc-Dumont was born in Saint-Amand-Montrond, France on March 7th 1948.  After completing an education in applied arts at the École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d'art in Paris, he worked as an art restorer.  However, during this time he also developed a passion for the wild west and Native Americans, which led to him starting comics work as a hobby in 1973.  This led to him joining a publishing company, where he started illustrating.

In 1974, Blanc-Dumont started work on the wild west comic Jonathan Cartland, written by Laurence Harlé, which chronicled the adventures of the trapper Jonathan Cartland.  Between 1975 and 1995, Harlé and Blanc-Dumont made ten Cartland albums, with Blanc-Dumont's wife Claudine assisting him on inking and colouring.

Aside from Cartland, Blanc-Dumont also did illustration work for advertisements and book covers, as well as work for magazines published by the French publisher Bayard Presse.  In 1991, as Jonathan Cartland was winding down, he worked on the short-lived aviation/detective comic Colby, written by Michel Greg.

Since 1998, Blanc-Dumont has taken over the artwork on the wild west comic series La Jeunesse de Blueberry (Young Blueberry), originally illustrated by Colin Wilson, and itself a spin-off of the cowboy series Blueberry which was originally created by writer Jean-Michel Charlier (1924-1989) and artist Jean Giraud in 1963.  Originally this was a collaboration between himself, writer François Corteggiani (who had taken over the writing duties on the series from Charlier after his passing in 1989), and Blanc-Dumont's wife Claudine as inker and colourist, however following the death of Claudine Blanc-Dumont in 2012, her work has been taken over by Jocelyne Etter-Charrance
