4608 takes a peek from the safety of the Mariembourg loc shed. As it's mid-winter, she's holed up inside, getting some care and maintenance - next summer, though, she will be busy again on the CFV3V's tourist line!
The Series 46/Type 554 entered service with the Belgian Railways in the early 1950s as a replacement for a great number of earlier DMU's that did not survive the Second World War. Some twenty were built, which were mainly used on local branch lines where there was only little traffic to cater for, as they were much more economic to run than a steam locomotive hauling carriages.
Due to their technical simplicity, the Type 554 - known after 1971 as the Series 46 - remained in service as late as 1999. They underwent a number of technical changes - such as the substitution of their original Brossel bus engines by a GM diesel engine, but the most eye-catching change was to their livery, which changed from green to red and yellow. Due to their relatively recent retirement, over half the original fleet of DMU 46s survived into preservation.
