Description

Odense Railway Museum (Denmark), August 31st 2014

The DSB Litra E was a compound steam locomotive for passenger transport, which originally started out as the Swedish Class F locomotive of 1914, built by Nydqvist & Holm AB and Bofors-Nohab AB of Trollhättan, Sweden.  In all, 11 SJ Class F locomotives (F 1200-1209 & F 1271) were built between 1914 and 1916, and they were used as express locomotives for passenger trains.

However, when the Class F was retired by the SJ in 1937 after the Västkustbanen was electrified, the entire class was sold to the Danish State Railways, where after some considerable modifications it became the Litra E (E 964 - 974).

The Litra E was such a powerful machine, that when the Danish Railways found itself lacking powerful locomotives in 1942, it actually decided to have additional Litra E locomotives built - this time by the Danish builder Frichs of Aarhus.  Between 1942 and 1950, and additional 25 Litra E locomotives (E 975 - 999) were added to the DSB's fleet.  Even though they were capable of a top speed of 127 kph, the Danish Railways had them limited to a top speed of 110 kph.  In Danish service, the type was used to haul both express trains and heavy freight trains.

In the end, the Litra E locomotives would be among the last steam locomotives to serve with the Danish Railways - they remained in service as late as 1975.  Even though most of the locomotives were scrapped after their retirement, a considerable number survived into preservation: two of the Swedish-built locomotives (E 964 & 966 - F 1200 & 1202)  were returned to Sweden, where they were restored to their original state; while five of the Danish-built locomotives have also survived - four scattered in Denmark (E 978, 987, 991 & 994), and a fifth one (E 996) in England.

E 994 was built in 1950, as one of the last Danish-built Litra E locomotives.  It was used on January 24th 1972 to haul the funeral train of King Frederik IX of Denmark (1899-1972) from Copenhagen to his last resting place in Roskilde.

You know, we had some fancy engines over here.  All of those 1850-1880's locomotives, and some of Lowey's streamlined examples and NC&Stl's "Dixie's", but the rest were so...  ugly.  Not trying to bash America or anything, it's just that these engine had something that we lost at some point.

I mean take the Prussian S3's for instance.  Gorgeous locomotives, shame none were preserved... :(
