GJ 1, a saloon car, was built in 1886 for the Gjedser Jernebane (Gedser Railway), a private company founded the same year. However, already in 1893, the GJ was absorbed into the Danish State Railways, at which point car GJ 1 became DSB car S7. It was highly luxurious - at the same level as the actual royal trains then in use - but unlike the royal train, it was also available for hire to private persons (a price equivalent of just 12 First Class tickets).
After a long career, GJ 1/DSB S7 was written off in the 1930s, and its body was sold to a private person for conversion into a summer cottage. As such, it remained in use until 1993, when the house came up for sale - its value was realised by the DSB who promptly bought it and had it restored to its former glory as a railway carriage.
