Description

Kinkempois depot, former Musée Ferroviaire de Kinkempois (closed), October 10th 2015.

Among many types to have served with the Belgian Railways, but which never seemed to gain the same degree of recognition as its more illustrious contemporaries, is the Type 40.

The Type 40 never started out as a Belgian locomotive in the first place, though.  Originally built by Baldwin from 1917 onwards for the Railway Operating Division of the US Army, the Type 40 was one of numerous American types which was taken over by the Belgian State Railways to replace equipment lost during World War I (conversely, the R.O.D. has previously also operated a number of Belgian locomotives on the Western Front).  These numerous types included the Type 50 (1919-1966), 57 (1919-1960) and 58 (1919-1966) tank engines, as well as the Type 39 "General Pershing" (1919-1924), as well as 70 Type 40 engines.

Before they entered service, it was found that the loading gauge of the Type 40 was too large for use in the Belgian Railways: as a result, the cabs all had to be rebuilt to Belgian standard, giving them a distinctive rounded top.  In service, the Type 40s were used for mixed purposes: they both served on passenger and freight trains.

The Type 40s, US Army veterans of the First World War, found themselves on the wrong and receiving end during the Second World War, but despite the worst that the Luftwaffe, Royal Air Force and US Army Air Force could do, 69 out of 70 Type 40s survived to see service post-War.  The last of the Type 40s was withdrawn from service in 1964; unfortunately, none were preserved.

Again a nice display case shot. What a pity the museum has closed.
