Description
TrainWorld Museum, Schaarbeek, Belgium; October 2nd 2015
Type 12 "Streamliner" locomotive of 1939, one of just 6 built by Cockerill of Seraing, Belgium. Designed by engineer M. Raoul Notesse, she was built as an express locomotive for use on the Brussels-Bruges-Ostend line.
On June 12th 1939, one of the Type 12s caught the Blue Ribbon when she hauled an express train on the Brussels - Bruges line at an average speed of 120.6 kph (74.9 mph), with peak speeds of 165 kph (102.5 mph).
The last regular service with the Type 12 took place on September 27th 1962 on the Brussels-Lille (France) line. Of the six locomotives, only 12.004 was preserved. She was restored to running condition on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Belgian Railways in 1985, after which she was run on special heritage services. However, in 2006 she sustained irreparable damage and was withdrawn from service. Restored cosmetically, she is now on display at the new TrainWorld museum in the Schaarbeek station near Brussels.
