Silver Super Sabre by kanyiko Silver Super Sabre by kanyiko
North American F-100D Super Sabre (Italeri model kit #098 - 1/72 scale)

The North American F-100 was a supersonic fighter and fighter-bomber which first flew on May 25th, 1953. It entered service in September 1954, but after six major accidents, the whole F-100 fleet was grounded in November. After an investigation, the problem was found and solved by modifying the tail surfaces and wings.
As a fighter, the F-100 fell short of expectations, but it did far better as a fighter-bomber. While the F-100A had been designed as a pure fighter aircraft, the F-100C and D were built as fighter-bombers, capable of carrying air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, conventional bombs or tactical nuclear bombs. Also, an F-100F two-seater version was built. In all, 2294 Super Sabres were built.

North American F-100D-65-NA 56-3020 was a Super Sabre which flew with the 353rd Tactical Fighter Squadron, 354th Tactical Fighter Wing of the US Air Force in 1958. It has been preserved, and now stands at the Jackson Barracks Military Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana.

I'm planning exactly the same on another 100 I have in my stash: I'll probably mod it with some armament from a Hasegawa kit (four M117 bombs, or otherwise some LAU-3A launchers) and decals from various sources, so it can join an SEA-camo line-up (F-104C with two M117s, and F-105D with a full bomb-truck load-out, B-57B Canberra, RB-66B Destroyer, and hopefully in the future also an F-102A)

Nice work on the afterburner section - always tricky on an F-100!

Thanks! ^_^

The kit is the 1/72 scale Italeri F-100D Super Sabre (kit #098), I built it some ten years ago now, using Humbrol Metalcote paints (first time I used them back then) It was built out of the box, complete with the kit's decals.
